During the holiday season, 25% more trash is produced, creating 1 million tons of extra waste each year. This is equivalent to about a million polar bears, so it’s a substantial amount of trash. To combat the increase in garbage, we can try different alternatives for wrapping gifts this year.

Recyclable paper

Recyclable paper is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to wrap gifts. Whether it’s from a grocery trip or a roll of post-consumer craft paper, both can serve as wrapping paper. If you’re using a paper bag, carefully remove the handles and unfold it to create a large sheet of wrapping paper. You can get creative by writing quotes, drawing, or painting on the paper before wrapping the gift.

Textiles

Instead of throwing away old clothing, use them as wrapping material. Make sure to clean the fabric before using it and cut it into a big enough piece to wrap your gift. Also, look for textiles with 100% natural fiber, that way it can be composted in the end.

seasonal flowers

You can also use seasonal flowers to decorate your gifts. Simply tie the bouquet with twine and hang it upside down for a couple of weeks. For a fragrant touch, consider using fresh eucalyptus or dried lavender.

citrus

Another creative idea is to dry slices of citrus fruits in the oven and use them as decorative elements for your gifts.

compostable tape & Twine

For wrapping, you can use compostable tape with paper or traditional twine with fabric. These simple changes will make beautifully wrapped, thoughtful, and sustainable gifts. After unwrapping, all the materials can be composted, recycled, or reused.
